#52weeksofWE - Theme 21 of 52, River Sides

Whether you are catching a show by one, fishing from one, or losing your footing and sliding into one, the sides of rivers can be truly fetching things. Rivers truly are part of our culture in Windsor – Essex, more so than many other places I have lived. Belle River, Detroit River, River Canard, Cedar Creek … that trickle of water behind your house that you have named after yourself. Take a picture of them ALL!

“The River was sure nice to look at, and back then as it is right now it’s a magnet. You can’t help but stand there and stare, the river rolling past with ducks and gulls on its back, the ocean on its mind.” Paul Vasey, The River

#52weeksofWE - Theme 20 of 52, Get to the Point

Careful! It’s pointy. The challenge this week is to photograph something that would be uncomfortable to sit on, for the most part. Unless of course you want to take this as an excuse to journey out to Point Pelee in which case, as long as you don’t mind a little sand on your behind, sitting on The Point is actually a pleasant thing. I dare you to find something that isn’t fetchingly pointy in Windsor – Essex.

#52weeksofWE - Theme 19 of 52, The Aviary

It will probably come as no surprise that there was a recent article on the Windsorite that talks about the importance of “birding” on Windsor – Essex’s tourism industry. Though many of you will probably know why that is so more than myself – something about migratory patterns – it is undeniable that it is important in our Southwestern Ontario culture. Luckily, our fine feathered, beaked, flying friends of ours do not hang out at the Pelee area birding hotspots exclusively, but pay us visits in the heart of Downtown, along the river, in our fields, our parks, and – how very VIP of us – in our backyards. So if you can catch one parked on a branch, or if you’re fast enough to snap a shot while they’re in transit, feel free to submit a shot of birds this week.

Green Fences on the Rails, Reflection on Weeks 14 through 16 on #52weeksofWE

Click on Week 14 Green with…, Week 15 Fenced Off, and Week16 Rail Ways to get their respective descriptions.

Pesky little things like work and family are getting in the way of my important work, writing up blog posts for #52weeksofWE. This is somewhat unfortunate – even if I am the only one reading them – because we have had some fantastic photos over the past little while. Hopefully, people are getting to the Flickr page and enjoying what has been posted.

Green things and green filters made their way into Week 14 of #52weeksofWE. There was enough green in nature, in spite of being early spring, that we got to see balcony gardens (one of my personal favourites) and –ahem- plastic pears. The green leaves of a flower imprinted on a plant, and the green details of graffiti filled our artistic quota. My own unending wit was represented when I took a black and white of the word “Green,” and the word “Windsor” on a field of green made up our textual contributions.

I was disappointed with my contribution to the Fenced Off week – though, if I remember correctly, I got some great shots the same week that did not involve fences. Luckily, fellow challengers more than made up for my shortcomings, and we were treated to the beauty of fences throughout Windsor – Essex. We had rural fences, the foreground of a misty backdrop; the hard lines of metal fences with a backdrop of fluid blue river behind; wooden fences of the suburbs seemingly stacked one upon the other. We even had a great one that captured the “fence” of a table saw. This creativity is what I love to see.

#52weeksofWE - Theme 18 of 52, Islands

No man is an island, but thankfully for this theme, an island is an island and we can capture them with our cameras. Not planning on catching a flight to Pelee or the ferry over to Boblo this week? Feel free to think about the definition of island - a landmass, especially one smaller than a continent, entirely surrounded by water – and get creative with it. Note the word especially; does that puddle out front surround a small patch of dry asphalt? That’s definitely smaller than a continent.
